Tag Out at school

The Tag Out Trust works alongside the Waitakere City Council assisting schools and educating students about graffiti removal and prevention.

About us | News & Information | Report tagging

The background Graffiti is an ever-increasing problem in Waitakere City. Part of the problem lies in apprehension of the taggers followed by appropriate consequences and punishment.

Prevention is ultimately the best way to reduce graffiti in the future, as more and more young people are being caught for committing this offence. Unfortunately the age of offenders is getting lower which keeps them out of the reach of the law. This means we have to act as a community to stop them re-offending.

School programmes

Graffiti education Tag Out Trust assists schools in dealing with tagging by speaking to certain individuals or groups on graffiti awareness, consequence and punishment, sharing information on graffiti control, removal, and volunteer services. We also help educate young people that it's not a 'cool' thing to do and that if they try tagging, there will be consequences for those illegal actions.

The police, Waitakere City Council and Youth Justice are taking a harder stance against taggers so it's no longer going to be so easy to offend, let alone re-offend. Many young people are not aware of the implications attached to being caught for tagging or the effect it could have on their future.

We inform students of these implications and try to persuade them to get involved in alternative activities. Activities that also encourage them to take pride in their community, volunteer to eradicate graffiti in their area or assist in Community Paint Out days.

Adopt a Spot More and more schools are becoming Adopt a Spot volunteers, taking care of walkways, fences, park facilities and self-done murals near their school. These volunteers remove graffiti as soon as it appears with paint supplied by Tag Out Trust. The tagger then gets no recognition for their scribble, knowing it will be wiped out instantly, so they are less likely to return.

It is also an activity schools could use for their detention students. If you would like to know more about becoming a volunteer, projects involving students for murals or educational talks please feel free to contact us.

We are happy to either send the information or come and talk at your school.

Graffiti Rangers The Waitakere City 'Graffiti Rangers' are young volunteers and are an essential part of Tag Out Trust's community prevention programme. They are the eyes and ears in the neighbourhood for identifying and reporting graffiti to Tag Out Trust, Waitakere City Council and the police. The rangers work in a similar way to Neighbourhood Watch groups but they look out for new graffiti and taggers.

The role of Graffiti Rangers:
  • Identifying taggers in their area to Tag Out Trust's operations manager
  • Calling the local police (Henderson) if they see anyone tagging, and inserting the information pamphlets into the letter boxes of properties that have been tagged
  • Assisting residents in their area to remove graffiti from their properties, especially if the residents themselves are unable to do so (i.e. if they are elderly or disabled)
  • Adopt a Spot (look after a walkway, park fence)
  • Take photos of taggers for evidence and send them to PO Box 15 215 New Lynn or e-mail to carl@tagout.org.nz, or give to the community constable
  • Write down the tags to record them for the police and Tag Out Trust's operations manager
  • Take down number plates of taggers for the police
  • Take down number plates of taggers for the police Not to talk to any taggers at any time (leave that to the police and Tag Out Trust's operations manager)
  • They do not go out on their own looking for taggers (especially at night). Go with an adult or your parents (e.g. while walking the dog).
The rangers will be supplied with:
  • Name badge / hat / notebook and pen
  • Instructions of what the ranger is to do (and not to do)
  • Information pamphlets
  • Police phone numbers (Henderson HQ, the community constables)
  • Waitakere City Council Call Centre number - to report graffiti and get Tag Out Trust contact details
  • Volunteer paint kit (paint, brush, wet paint tape) if you are adopting an area
  • Newsletters of what's going on and what's happening in the city regarding graffiti
Welcome aboard new Graffiti Rangers - we look forward to working with you.
